In order to be able to drive well on loose sand you have to deflate your tyres for extra grip and to keep moving. We became a lot more expert as we practiced. One very important skill was to drive at speed up a hill but not to over the top of a dune until you knew what was on the other side. Sometimes a dune is very steep and at the bottom ends in a sharp V. Oncc you are committted you really cannot turn. Keeping straight up and down is very important or your lower wheels can sink in with at danger of overturning.
